Pond-less" waterfall kits create a water feature that brings you the enjoyment of a bubbling stream or splashing waterfall, without a large body of standing surface water. Instead, at the end of a pond-less waterfall the water disappears through a bed of gravel. Underneath the gravel is a small basin of water and the pump, returning the water to the top of the system. Because the bulk of the system's water is shielded from the sunlight in the basin, pond-less waterfalls very low maintenance.

Pond-less waterfalls need little attention—some beneficial bacteria added to colonize on rocks in the system and aquatic plants can work to keep algae growth restricted. The small amount of algae and biologic sludge that does accumulate does so slowly. If you don't want plants in your pond-less system and you don't have pets around to drink from it, you can chlorinate the water just like a pool and never worry about biological build-up.
