Spread, Path, & Area Lighting are used most
effectively in landscapes that contain pathways, walkways, borders,
driveways, low shrubbery and decorative ground cover. Through
proper spread, path, & area fixture arrangement and placement,
the safety, security and aesthetic quality of a landscape is
enhanced. When done propertly, spread, path, and area
lighting invites one to explore a landscape, drawing the eye to
areas of special interest.

SPREAD LIGHTING
Spread lighting or low area lighting
produces symmetrical patterns of illumination and is most effective
when used for lighting ground cover and low shrubbery. Use
well shielded fixtures set near the plantings to highlight an
interesting array of textures, shapes, and colors.

PATH LIGHTING
PAth lighting also casts symmetrical light
patterns but at a lower height. This type of lighting is
ideal for illuminating pathways, borders, steps and landscape
contures. Light from spread or path lights is usually
diffused or shielded to reduce glare. Lighting a pathway or
driveway requires fixtures to be placed in a number of spacing
patterns. The circle of light distribution from one light can
be spaced to just meet the edge of the next circle of light,
overlap it, or have space between them. The type of spacing
you choose will be determined by how much light is needed for
someone to safely navigate the area in combination with the type of
foliage along the route ant the mood you wish to create. Take
full advantage of the light throw produced by spread and path
lights, the fixtures should be kept to open areas where plant
growth doesn't restrict light distribution.

TRAFFIC LIGHTING
Traffic lighting is one of the most
important functions of lighting in a landscape. Use spread
and path lights to illuminate garden spaces that direct visitors
through the landscape, show them what obstacles to avoid and where
they should walk. Steps, bridges and walkways are all
examples of areas best illuminated by spread and path
lights.
