Instructions for use:

How Much: One scoop treats up 100 gal./378 liters of pond water

How Often: When adding to the pond for the first time, or if water quality is poor, use a double dose weekly for the first two weeks. Continue adding 1 scoop per 100 gallons of pond water every two weeks throughout the season as a maintenance dosage and to maintain optimum water quality.

How To: Mix SAB Stream and Pond Clean in a clean bucket used only for your pond. SAB should be activated in the bucket with warm water (about 80F / 26C) and poured around the parameter of the pond or stream. When mixed, the product should be added to the pond quickly to provide best results. Pond water may become temporarily clouded depending on the pH of the pond.

For smaller ponds, use at the rate of 1 pump per 100 gal./378 liters of water.

The dye can last from 4 months down to 1 week depending on rainfall, water flow through the pond (or retention time of the pond) and the desired shading you want to keep. On an average: 4-6 weeks. We have local retention ponds that require a boost every 2 weeks throughout the season. Usually it is the smaller ponds that have the potential of rainfall and watershed diluting the dye quickly. How it works: Accumulation of nitrogen is one of the most critical problems of a re-circulating "water re-use" system. Nitrogen in the system, commonly referred to as Total Ammonia-Nitrogen (TAN), is a by-product of protein metabolism. TAN is excreted from the gills of fish as they digest food and is produced when bacteria decomposes organic waste solids within the system. When the water in a system has a pH of about 7.0, the system is stable and the majority of TAN is ionized and does not adversely affect the system. But when a system has a pH of about 9.0, up to 30 percent of TAN may not be ionized and levels of ammonia-nitrogen can become extremely toxic to fish.

Nitrite-nitrogen results from the oxidation of ammonia-nitrogen. When nitrifying bacteria (nitrosomonas) consume ammonia-nitrogen for energy, they produce nitrite-nitrogen as a by-product. Nitrite-nitrogen then binds with hemoglobin to form methemoglobin, which is not capable of binding and transporting oxygen. This ultimately suffocates the fish. In most cases re-circulating systems with mature nitrifying bacteria colonies should maintain nitrite-nitrogen concentrations below 1 mg/l. Fortunately, nitrobacter bacteria, also present within the system, use nitrite-nitrogen for energy and produce a much less harmful nitrate-nitrogen by-product.
Nitrifying bacteria are the foundation of biological filtration and safely grow on all surfaces of the aquatic environment, including substrate, plumbing and the walls of the tank.

What’s in the products?

Heterotrophic Bacteria
Heterotrophic bacteria are responsible for the reduction and decomposition of organics including pond sludge. Heterotrophic strains of bacteria are easy to source and found in many products currently on the market for various purposes including waste water treatment.

Lithotrophic Bacteria
The most common and important types of lithotrophic bacteria in a water garden are nitrosomonas and nitrobacter. These are vital in the active removal of ammonia and nitrite caused by the decomposition caused by the heterotrophic strains. There are many theories on the name of the actual bacterial genus responsible but most agree on these two strains. Lithotrophs are harder to source and reproduce at a slower rate, making them relatively more expensive.

Older Formulations (Pre-2009)
In the past, our formulations were mostly different strains of heterotrophic bacteria. Our goal was to make a product that combines heterotrophic and lithotrophic bacteria in different ratios. More heterotrophs for the removal of sludge, more lithotrophs for supporting the nitrogen cycle and making the pond stable.

NOTE:

It's very important that you test the amount of copper that's available in a new pond or after a cleanout where there is very little bioactivityand/or algae to consume the copper, or copper levels can elevate quite quickly andcause a problem. Q&A

Is this system detrimental for use in ponds with biologic filtration? Wouldn't it be counter-productive to invertebrates of all kinds?

Answer: The IonGen will work in conjunction with existing biological filtration; it is releasing such miniscule amounts that it will not harm fish or invertebrates. It is recognized by the algae as a nutrient and absorbed so quickly you will not even detect it in your water table.

If I cannot install the IonGen in my tubing, where should the IonGen should be placed:?

Answer: It is functional anywhere water is passing through it. The Skimmer box is probably easiest because it's most likely already close to an electrical supply but it can be used in the BioFalls or even laying in the stream. Regardless the probes should be left inside the provided "T" fitting in any of the installation scenarios to protect them. We have seen applications however where the probe when dropped into a Skimmer or Biofalls and not installed in-line is not receiving sufficient flow. The result is poor ion distribution and the probes begin to scale up because the ions are not being pushed away with the flow. This can cause the green light not to be solid and continually flashing or the power not being able to be raised all the way. In some cases, the IonGen did work at full powewr but as the probe's bars scaled up, the probe got suffocated. The probe can be removed from the Flow Chamber and scraped clean and placed back in the filter WITHOUT the Flow Chamber.

Can I leave the IonGen in my pond all winter?

Answer: If the pond is running then it can be used all winter in it. If they turn off the waterfall and just have a bubbler / heater then it's best to take it out as it won't really be doing anything!

Do you absolutely need a GFI with an IonGen because it only draws 1 watt?

Answer: It is not necessary, but recommended to reduce risk of electric shock

I can only screw in my probe 2 revolutions and it does not appear that the Probe is all the way in. Is this a problem?

Answer: The cap is not going to thread down all of the way. It is a tapered fitting. If you are going to plumb it in line you may want to use Teflon tape on the probe fitting and wrench the fitting down to make it water tight

My Green light has been flashing since Saturday afternoon when we plugged it in. It immediately went to full bars. Is this a problem?

Answer: If the green light is flashing there is no need to be alarmed. It is still working fine. The newest units are self-calibrating.

The Instruction Manual recommends PH/Alkalinity Test Strips 98953 but I cannot find them on your site.

Answer: There was a misprint in the first Instruction Manual. That part number is actually the Spring Start-up Kit. The correct item# for the PH/Alkalinity Test Strips is 80005 and is in the same drop-down box as the IonGen above.

Will the salt I put it my pond adversely affect the IonGen?

Answer: It will not affect the IonGen. In fact, it will actually increase the conductivity of the unit. Many ponds will require the addition of non-iodized salt (1 lb per 200 gallons) just to get the conductivity to a level where the IonGen will work correctly.

I have had my unit for 3 weeks now and I am not getting a copper reading on my test strips.

Answer: It is most likely a new generation self-calibrating unit so it will raise and lower the amount of copper on its own. Not reading any copper in the water table is normal as the copper is being absorbed by the algae as quickly as it enters the pond/stream bed.It may take 6-8 wks to see results.

There is a Red Dot on the top of the probe. What is that for?

Answer: The red dot should be in line in the direction that the water is flowing for best results. Another way to describe it is that the water should be flowing like a football going through the uprights.

Is it ok to use Aquascape's Pond Detoxifier productor other products that bind heavy metals like copper?

Answer: Detox is designed to bind heavy metals. If you use Detox or add Detox every time you top-off your pond, the IonGen will; not be as effective.

We are using well water. Will the IonGen work as well?

Answer: Sometimes the alkalinity can be over 250 which can be too high which may cause the copper ions to not function as well. You should probably test your water with a decent test kit (sometimes the test strips do not get accurate readings and have a +/- accuracy of 10%)

I have heard the first IonGens did not automatically recalibrate. How do I know if I have an old or a new IonGen?

Answer: Serial #'s 0005774 and BELOW are generation 1 units, 0005775 and above are new generation 2 units.

Can the Control Panel be mounted outside in the elements? Is it waterproof?

Answer: For G1 Units only , the control panel is NOT waterproof. It is weather proof though, it cannot be submerged in water or anything similar, it can be rained on though and still work. For G2 Units, the new control units are waterproof. Part of the new improvments over the G1 units.

GreenClean is a unique granular product that offers the professional a new tool in the control of problematic algae within the growing environment. GreenClean is an alternative to algaecides that utilize copper or other harsh chemicals as their active ingredients. Regular observation of your koi and goldfish will allow problems such as parasites and bacterial or fungal diseases to be detected early.

Be familiar with your koi or goldfish's normal shape, size and color as well as swimming habits.

A change in these factors may signal a problem. The problem must be identified in order to know the steps to take for treatment with the proper medication. Treating for a parasite, bacteria or fungus requires different medication.

Every pond owner with fish, at some time or another, will probably have to medicate their pond.

Though Koi are extremely hardy, it is very important to keep a watch on their environment to keep them at their healthiest.

Attention should be paid to the quality of water and balance of the pond (i.e. pH levels etc.). However, if problems do occur, the first step is to remove the individual fish or decide whether to treat the entire pond.

It is sometimes difficult to be aware of a problem with a koi or goldfish until its too late.

Be aware of your Koi's behavior patterns so changes can be detected early. A change in your Koi's behavior is usually the first sign that that your Koi are stressed or ill and may need some type of koi medicine or treatment.

How Does It Work?

Pond Salt improves gill function and protects against common pond toxins. Most common diseases and infections can be cured and prevented simply by adding pond salt. Pond Salt will also help in the fight against string algae by softening the water!

Using an electronic salt meter like the Koi Salt Pen will give you control of your salt levels. When I add salt to my ponds, I place the salt in front of my skimmer so it disolves slowly as the water is being drawn into the skimmer and up to my waterfalls. This gives my fish time to adjust to the higher salt levels safely.
Do not allow the salt to come in direct contact with the fish because it could hurt them in such high concentration form.
A 0.25% level is best for bacteria and parisite control. Allow to stay at this level for one week, then dilute down to 0.10%

APPLICATION RATES:

With out Aquatic Plants:
Use 2-1/2 cups per 100 gallons of water. Use 5 cups per 100 gallons of water when treating for disease.

With Aquatic Plants:
Use 1-1/4 cups per 100 gallons of water. When treating for disease, isolate the fish into another tank with vigorous aeration and use 5 cups per 100 gallons.

TJB-INC TESTING TIP:

Because high levels of salt in your pond water will injure plants and fish, be sure to have some sort of salinity measuring device before adding any salt. Then only add small amounts until the meter reads 0.25% mamimum. This level is high enough to kill 99% of the harmful parisites & bacteria in your pond but not kill all of your pond plants. TJB-INC Treatment Reccommendations:

Salt at 0.1% Solution: Use this treatment primarily as a stress reducer. As a stress reducer, it can be used after major emergency water changes or when handling the fish during pond clean-out. It will also slow down any attacking pathogens, as well as promote more slime coat production, which is vital to the integrity of the fish's immune system. Overcrowding and overfeeding can lead to toxic levels of nitrite.(see artical below) Pond salt will temporarily block the toxic effects of nitrite while corrective action is taken.
Salt at 0.2% Solution: This treatment is also utilized as a stress reducer, slime coat enhancer and will improve fish gill function. During periods of stress and disease, healthy gill function is disturbed causing "osmotic shock". This can cause a loss of electrolyte (magneseium, calcium, sodium, chloride and potassium) in the body fluids of pond fish, as well as increase the levels of carbon dioxide and ammonium leading to serious health problems. Pond salt provides the essential electrolytes fish need to maintain good health. In addition, a 0.2% salt solution will do a slightly better job a killing certain protozoan parasites, such as Trichodina, Ich, and Chilodonella. However, don't use as the sole means for curing these parasites.

Nitrate Poisoning

Description: Nitrite poisoning follows closely on the heels of ammonia as a major killer of aquarium fish. Just when you think you are home free after losing half your fish to ammonia poisoning, the nitrites rise and put your fish at risk again. Anytime ammonia levels are elevated, elevated nitrites will soon follow. To avoid nitrite poisoning, test when setting up a new tank, when adding new fish to established an tank, when the filter fails due to power or mechanical failure, and when medicating sick fish.

Symptoms:

Different species of fish tolerate differing levels of nitrite. Some fish may simply be listless, while others may die suddenly with no obvious signs of illness. Common symptoms include gasping at the surface of the water, hanging near water outlets, rapid gill movement, and a change in gill color from tan to dark brown.

Fish that are exposed to even low levels of nitrite for long periods of time suffer damage to their immune system and are prone to secondary diseases, such as ich, fin rot, and bacterial infections. As methemoglobin levels increase damage occurs to the liver, gills and blood cells. If untreated, affected fish eventually die from lack of oxygen, and/or secondary diseases.

Treatment:

Nitrite is lethal at much lower levels than ammonia. Therefore it is critical to continue daily testing and treatment until the nitrite falls to zero.

Prevention:

Feed fish small quantities of foods, and remove any food not consumed in five minutes. Clean the pond yearly, taking care to remove an dead plants or other debris. Perform a partial water change at least every other week, more often in small heavily stocked ponds. Always test the water for nitrite after an ammonia spike has occured as there will be a nitrite increase later.
