8/19/2011 – how often do you need to clean it. I hose it off when I see a layer of brown slimy algae(?)on it. But then I read somewhere that it should be done only 1 a year as there are helpful bacteria growing in it? Should I replace it with Matala mat? The one I have now has holes precut to fit around the pipes,do you sell that? It is rounded at the back and flat across the front
Response From TJB-INC: You have asked questions regarding 2 different mats.
The BioFall Mats get cleaned once a year in the spring. The slime that you are washing off during the year is the beneficial bacteria that grows on and through the mats. This slime is supposed to be there. It is what helps to keep your pond water clean. You wash the mats in the spring because this beneficial bacteria dies when the water temperatures go below 40 degrees.
The Mat with the holes cut in them is a Skimmer Mat. This is the mat that collect debris from the pond and should be cleaned as needed through out the season.
I do carry the replacements of both mats when you need them.
