Will the Away With Geese product work year-round?
The product will provide continuous service year-round. What if I have geese at my pond that have recently had goslings? Will the mother and goslings be deterred?

Do I need to bring my Away With Geese in for the winter season?

How many acres will one light cover?
Three acres are well covered with one light. When you have a par five at 580 yards with a pond/lake running all along one side you will need two lights. The first one should be placed ¼ of the way and the second at the ¾ mark of the water. This will give some over lapping but total coverage.

Dear Mr. M: I can appreciate your careful investigation into the Away With Geese devices. Not everything advertised on the Internet is what it seems. I even called and spoke to Tom Wells, founder of the company before purchasing. In this case the product is all that it claims to be. We have tried many things to discourage the geese. Some were pretty weird; I will not enumerate them. We installed the lights August 1, 2010 whenwe had approximately 250 geese on and around the lake. By August 15 we had no geese except for one with a broken wing and its mate. The original lights are still functioning. The lights are well designed and are made of durable materials. There is no maintenance. Install them with an anchor and let them do their job. Promptly replace the lights should they succumb to vandals or simply wear out. We have lived in northern NJ with our beautiful property that abuts a large pond being COVERED with goose droppings, year after year. I’ve used a Residential Unit on about a 3-acre lake for almost two years. The resident geese left in less than a month. “We have owned the Away With Geese light for two years. The results have been very impressive to date. Two years ago we had just over 30 geese nesting in and around our 1/4 acre pond. Lakefront Relaxing (Not Cleaning Up!) in Maine

Sanity Restored for Tractor-Wielding Doc in Boston!

We live on an acre of land that abuts a wetland. About ten years two geese made that wetland (and our lawn) their home. This summer I counted 28 geese on my lawn. You can imagine the filth associated with that number plus the fact that they were destroying the grass’ roots… My first attempt to remediate the situation was to drive my lawn tractor after them until they sought shelter in the wetland. This worked for a while, but two things occurred. First, my neighbors began to worry about my sanity as I drove wildly around the yard. Second, the geese had more patience than I and would merely wait ten minutes after my disappearance and then nonchalantly return to eating my grass.

I checked with my golf club’s greens keeper who suggested Away With Geese. I installed the device. What happened next was interesting. After three days the geese no longer appeared on my lawn. My neighbors and I were stunned by that development. There was peace on my lawn after all for the next two months. I have seen some geese on the lawn from time to time, which indicates that they are still living in the wetland, but they have been conspicuously absent from my lawn. Lawn and Pond Reclaimed in Pennsylvania

My wife and I moved into our home in January of this 2012. We were thrilled to finally have 3 acres of land plus a large pond. By April we had a few geese and within a few weeks we had more than twenty. We were under siege with droppings and honking. We tried all sorts of methods to rid our pond and property of these geese. Nothing worked!! Then, while searching the Internet for methods to chase them away, we saw your product. No Longer Sharing Retirement Home with 75 geese in Epping, New Hampshire

“I can honestly say that I cannot be without my “Away With Geese” unit because it does just exactly that, it removed the population.

Our first Spring season at our waterfront lake home was last year and we were inundated with geese, anywhere from 50 to 75 and what a mess of poop everywhere, over the grass and sandy beach. They nested just a few feet from the house, perhaps from past history. We assumed it was because the property was vacant for a year. We tried everything. They literally took over our half acre and 100 ft of beach.

In a conversation we were told about “Away With Geese” and once looking over the website we ordered our unit without hesitation and sooooo glad we did. We ordered one that went in the water, and actually liked the blinking light as it floated over the water with a tether.

They had their young (we didn’t order soon enough) but within a month they no longer returned. It’s absolutely the only thing that does the job in getting rid of geese without harm.

They are aggressive and do not react to noise or yard statues or balloons of any kind. They do, however, react to the Away With Geese unit.

I would absolutely advise anyone who has geese problems to get one.

1 Light, 3 Weeks, 0 Geese, and a Happier (and Healthier) Dog in Connecticut

To say that I am a satisfied Away With Geese customer is an understatement. We moved to a home on a lake about a year ago. As soon as we moved in we noticed the geese and they certainly loved our backyard! I would try to send my dog out to scare them, but our golden retriever was more afraid of them than they were of him. In fact, the geese didn’t seem too bothered by him at all. Unfortunately, the mess they would leave on our lawn daily, which was disgusting to us, also became a delicacy for our dog.

Thankfully my research uncovered Away With Geese. I was skeptical, but I was willing to try almost anything! The instructions indicated that it might take a few weeks to work. I will say each week the number of geese on our lawn lessened after installing the light. By week three they were gone. This past December, my husband took the light out thinking the geese had all gone down south. Within a day they were back! I put the light back in, and just like that, they were gone again.

When spring came, some new geese tried coming onto the lawn again, but they soon learned we were not a friendly environment and the light caused them to leave. This light has been a godsend. Principal Saves School Children from Health Risks of Geese

This is the product I have used with great success! The makers are Away With Geese and their website is www.awaywithgeese.com. At the time I used this, I was the principal of an elementary school with 500 children. We had a large field with the neighboring Shiverick’s Pond as home to our feathered friends. On any given day, there could be 20 or more geese on the field. As a result, we had an ongoing problem with children tracking the goose poop into the building after playing in the field outside. It was everywhere! The hallways were a mess but worse than that, children were sitting on classroom rugs that had been walked across with shoes contaminated by the poop. It dried from the shoes and littered the rooms. It was a health risk. We tried a number of things from air horns to coyote statues but nothing worked. A parent found this solution and offered to purchase it for our school. We had nothing to lose. We installed a land-based unit. Within a couple of weeks, there were less and less geese landing until there were none— except for a random day when a few might forget they were not invited! It was odd to have a day here or there with a sighting but the greater problem was solved.

I would have a recommendation though as you consider a purchase. Follow the guidelines the owners give regarding the number of units needed. We had only one and I think we would have benefited from two. Instead, we moved the unit on occasion if we found that the geese were starting to randomly land. I have moved on to another school but would not hesitate to use this product again if the need arose. And one more thing- the owner is genuinely interested in having the unit work for you! When we had a problem with the flashing mechanism, he stood by the product and immediately sent a replacement at no charge.

“When a large flock of geese suddenly began gathering on Elder High School’s 65-acre athletic complex two years ago, leaving droppings where students practiced and played games, the school’s facilities manager, Dick McCoy, knew he needed to do something fast.

‘The first day I saw 20 geese,’ he said. ‘The next day I saw 30 or 40 geese. After a week there were about 60 geese and they were all over the fields. It was taking hours each day to clean up after them.’
In the fall of 2011, just a few weeks after the initial geese appeared at Elder, the school bought three of Wells’ lights at $350 apiece and placed them around the athletic complex where they can protect up to three acres of space each.

‘After two days of the lights, I never saw them again,’ said McCoy, who now uses the lights during the spring, summer and fall to keep the geese from coming back. He also added a fourth to the school’s tennis courts after the geese showed up there.

Many airports around the world have problems with birds being sucked into the intake of the jet engine scausing potential serious damage to the engine. The scientific name for Canada Geese is Branta canadensis. The birds often migrate in the fall, but isolated populations may reside year round. Nesting begins in March and April, in the riparian zone near a waterbody.

One goose can consume up to four pounds of grass per day, producing about three pounds of fecal matter per day. This can contribute to excessive amounts of nutrient loading because their feces contain 76% carbon, 4.4% nitrogen, and 1.3% phosphorus. These nutrients can cause harmful algal blooms in lakes from runoff. To make matters worse Cryptosporidium parvum, a protozoan linked to the feces of animals has caused over 400,000 sicknesses and a recorded six deaths (Worsnop, 1994).

Predator hunting and most specifically Coyote Hunting has grown significantly across the United States along with the overall coyote population. The Coyote's scientifc name (Canis Latrans) means "barking dog" while the common name Coyote comes from the "Coyotl" the name used by Mexico's Nahuati Indians. This fast mammal can top out at over 40 mph for short distances and can make 14 foot leaps. Many myths from Native American peoples include a character who plays the role of trickster. While Coyote's often grow up to 26" in shoulder height, this decoy was designed smaller to play on the coyote's natural instinct to defend its territory and rid the area of unwelcome trespassers. Decoy Placement & Hunting Tips

1. Do not get human or unnatural scent on the decoy. Use gloves when carrying and positioning the decoy, then spray it with scent eliminator.

2. Place decoys upwind of where you expect the coyote to appear. Coyotes instinctively approach downwind.

3. Place decoys within your personal shooting distance in a clean shooting lane ... SAFETY FIRST!

4. Do not place the decoy in a direct line between you and where you expect the coyote to come from, the coyote may see you. Place the decoy off to one side of your location to distract the coyote's attention from your position.

5. Increase stability in strong wind by facing decoy "nose-first" into the wind.

6. Stake legs to the ground in windy areas by drilling holes in any of the 4 paws.

7. For added effectiveness, add crow & rabbit decoys to create a realistic setting and increase the confidence of approaching coyotes.

NOTE: We have noticed that the decoy only works well on adolescent & adult Canada Geese. The young chicks have not been exposed to most predators so they do not know to be afraid. If they are separated from their adult guardians, they will approch Coyote Decoys without any fear (just like a young puppy). My yellow lab thought the poo was a "tasty" treat before he decided to do a full body slide through the poo leaving a green/brown mess in his fur for me to clean. He would then stand up and smile with a look that said "that was fun, I think I will do it again!" (Anyone who has owned a lab can relate to my situation). We now have a swan decoy (seen in pictures above) in our pond and the Coyote Decoy on the shore to help scare away the Canada Geese. I attached a 20' fishing line tether to the bottom of the swan which is connected to a brick that I put into the pond. As the wind blows, the decoy moves around on top of the water. So far, with both of the decoys in place, my lab & my lawn have stayed free of Canada Geese Poo. Now if I can get him to stop trying to "hump" the coyote decoy, I will be all set. ... TED

PS. If you do not tether the swan decoy, make sure to move it around so the Canada Geese think it is real. This will increase effectiveness. If it is left in the same location, the geese will quickly figure out the decoy is fake and will not be afraid of it. Great for use with other deterrent methods like the Coyote and allowing the first 2' of growth next to the pond to be allowed to grow tall and wild. This will help keep the geese off your lawn.
