Important things to remember:
• Keep your Bite Stick with you at all times.
• Place the grip of the Bite Stick firmly in your hand, keeping the rod extended outward in case of attack.
•When using your handheld to input information, rest the Bite Stick under your arm. Don't lay it on the ground; Keep it where you can retrieve it while still standing. Maintain dominant posturing. Having to retrieve the Bite Stick from the ground will make you appear more submissive.
• Your Bite Stick should be extended in front of you as you enter the yard or until you have had a chance to completely evaluate the dog or dogs confronting you.
• If you are familiar with the dog(s), and are in a non-threatening situation, hold the stick down along your side, making it part of your body. You will still want to have the Bite Stick with you in case the dog becomes aggressive or another dog has been added to the home.
*** ATTACKED! *** Scenario #1
The dog is aggressively coming toward you. Extend the Bite Stick out in front of you, waving the rod side to side to see if the dog will target the bite stick instead of you. If the dog is watching the bite stick keep the stick moving. If the dog grabs the stick, "GO WITH THE DOG". It will be your instinct to pull back. DON'T. Let the dog pull you to safety. If the dog is just chewing on the bite stick but not moving, push the dog in the direction of the gate or your vehicle.
• If the dog has a tight hold on the Bite Stick and you are through the gate and you are safe, let the Bite Stick go! The Bite Stick can be replaced.
*** ATTACKED! *** Scenario #2
The dog is not looking at the Bite Stick but is looking at you. At this point the Bite Stick should be used to keep the dog at bay. Keep your Bite Stick in front of you following the movements of the dog. Also, move toward the fence; get your back up against the fence, keeping the dog from getting behind. Follow the fence line to the gate and get out.
• If there is no fence, keep the Bite Stick in front of you. If you must move backwards; keep your side to the dog protecting vital areas of your body. Slide your feet to test what is behind you. You do not want to fall with this dog.
• Use the Bite Stick to protect you if the dog attacks, when striking the dog, swing the Bite Stick in a back hand motion across your body (you should be standing with a side posture), never stand frontal to the dog. If the dog were to get to you before you can defend yourself, you can at least deflect the dog away by just lifting your arm, protecting your face, neck and chest.
