SELECTING A PUMP: Choosing a pump for a water garden should be based on a few job requirements. Desired flow, pumping height and electrical costs are all factors that need to be considered. The higher the pump needs to push water, the less flow you are going to get out of that pump. Pond Kits come with pumps sized to turn a pond over at least once per hour. Make sure your pump application follows the same guideline. If your applications' pumping height is close to maximum pump shut off height, substitute the next larger pump available.

NOTE: If you need this pump quickly, do not choose "Parcel Post" as your shipping option at check out. We have found that Parcel Post can take 3-4 days longer than what is listed as shipping times. Proper plumbing is very important!!!

Your pump can only work as well as your plumbing system allows it to. A larger pump does not always mean more water. A larger pump and larger pipe does mean more water. You can only fit a certain amount of water through a certain size hose.

1"hose= 1,500gph 2" hose= 5,400gph
1-1/4" hose= 2,700gph 3" hose= 13,500gph
1-1/2" hose= 3,600gph 4" hose= 21,000gph

For example: If you have a pump that is rated for 7,200gph and you are using a 2" flex hose. You are only going to get about 5,400gph coming out at the end of the pipe. Yes, head height, elbows, etc. have a factor in it also but I am trying to keep it simple and make a point. If you need more GPH, try using 2 hoses or upsize to a larger diameter hose.

TJB TIPS

Feeding your fish is one of the most enjoyable times you will spend with your pond. It provides the oportunity to bond with, tame and train your fish. Always place it in the same place each time you feed you fish. This way the fish learn that when you are in this spot, it means they will be fed. Soon you can train them to eat out of your hand.

Our pond fish require different types of foods for different seasons. During late spring and summer you should use a staple that contains higher amounts of protein. Protein is used by the body for bone and tissue growth. Fish, as in humans, do not store protein in the body. It is used for growth, however a small amount may be converted to carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are burned as engery for swimming. It is stored in the body as fat so it is essential that a lower protein content be used during cooler temperatures. Your fish won't have the benefit feeding on a regular basis during the winter. Therefore a wheatgerm based diet should be used so the fish can store carbs and fat for the winter. Fish will eat both animal and vegetable matter which makes them omnivorous. They do not have stomachs so they can't eat large amounts at one time. This is the reason your fish spend a great deal of time foraging around. Fish will actually eat just about anything that is small enough for them to swallow whole.

The hand-feeding process can be pleasurable for both you and your fish or goldfish. Instead of throwing the fish pellets into the pond, take the time to place them into the water at the same area daily. In so doing, the fish will become accustomed to the routine and will, over time, become friendly and trusting enough to be hand-fed. Pond fish have even been known to recognize there owners' footsteps and follow them around the waters edge.

Taming and training your pond fish is a gradual process, but it can be very rewarding. Spending this time with your fish will also allow you to observe any problems early on.

Your fish should be fed one tenth of their body weight per day. A 12 inch fish weighs approximately one pound. If you have ten, 12 inch fish in your system you should be feeding a total of one pound per day. Make sure that your filter can handle the processing of that amount by checking your water quality regularly.

ECOLOGICAL BALANCE. If you understand this basic fact, your water will always be clear, not green. FISH WASTE + PLANT WASTE = PLANT FOOD = REQUIRING ADEQUATE PLANTS TO UTILIZE THE PLANT FOOD = BALANCE = CLEAR WATER.

Over-feeding fish, and/or not enough pond plants = green water 90% of the time. A simple solution that doesn’t come out of a bottle: Understand proper pond balance, and you’ve got it whipped!! The Ammonia-nitrite-nitrate cycle is a fact of nature. Fish and plant waste (ammonia) get converted by bacterias into nitrite, which gets converted by additional bacterias into nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite in small amounts can be harmful, and even lethal, to fish. Nitrates, the final step, can be concentrated at much higher levels without being harmful to fish. If there are not enough plants to handle this additional nitrate, (plant food), LOOK OUT!!!, nature will supply it free gratis in the form of green water and/or string/filamentous algaes.

In a balanced pond, these algaes will still be present, but in low enough numbers that you won’t even notice them without really, really looking. A mature, balanced pond will have literally no traces of ammonia or nitrites, only nitrate. As a result of this information, go slow with a new pond as far as putting in a lot of fish or feeding them a lot for the first month or so. Give it a chance to colonize these bacteria's in sufficient numbers to be able to mature and handle the pond’s biological needs, as well as letting the aquatic and marginal plants get established.

Heterotrophic Bacteria
Heterotrophic bacteria are responsible for the reduction and decomposition of organics including pond sludge. Heterotrophic strains of bacteria are easy to source and found in many products currently on the market for various purposes including waste water treatment.

Lithotrophic Bacteria
The most common and important types of lithotrophic bacteria in a water garden are nitrosomonas and nitrobacter. These are vital in the active removal of ammonia and nitrite caused by the decomposition caused by the heterotrophic strains. There are many theories on the name of the actual bacterial genus responsible but most agree on these two strains. Lithotrophs are harder to source and reproduce at a slower rate, making them relatively more expensive.

Older Formulations (Pre-2009)
In the past, our formulations were mostly different strains of heterotrophic bacteria. Our goal was to make a product that combines heterotrophic and lithotrophic bacteria in different ratios. More heterotrophs for the removal of sludge, more lithotrophs for supporting the nitrogen cycle and making the pond stable.

New Formulations have Higher Concentrations of bacteria

If Aquascape bacterial products are added on a regular basis and populations found in our products become dominant, it helps promote competitive exclusion (The competitive exclusion principle, sometimes referred to as Gause's Law of competitive exclusion or just Gause's Law, states that two species that compete for the exact same resources cannot stably coexist.).

The higher the bacteria count in the pond, the more bacteria will start to utilize other elements that can cause unsightly water conditions including algae. Some scientists have also proven that the use of beneficial bacteria can also eliminate bad bacterias like salmonella found in captive turtle environments.

Calculations for Water Volume of Ponds , Streams & Waterfalls

Pond Water Volume

(Length x Width x Average Depth) x 7.48 = Water Volume of Pond in gallons

1 cubic ft. = 7.48 gallons of water

Example: Pond Measures: 11’L x16’W x 2’AD

(11'L x 16'W x 2'AD) x 7.48 = 2,634 Gallons of water

(The addition of rocks and gravel will lessen the actual water volume beacuse of displacement)

Water Volume in a Stream

(Length x Width x Depth) x 7.78 = Water Volume of Stream in Gallons

Example: Stream Measures: 15'L x 3'W x 2"D

First Calculate Depth in feet not inches: 1" = 0.12' so ... 2"D = 0.24'D

(15'L x 3"W x 0.24'D) x 7.48 = 81 Gallons of Water

Water Volume in Waterfalls = Same as Streams

During the warmer months, the air stone discs should be in the deepest part of the pond to add oxygen to the stagnet areas. This additional oxgyen will help breakdown fish waste and other decaying organic matter much quicker. Your pond and it's inhabitants will be much better for it.
During the cold winter months, raise the air stone disks to a shelf that is around 12 inches from the surface. This will keep the warmer water down in the bottom of the pond so your fish won't freeze, but yet keep a hole open in the ice so the harmful gases form the deacying organic matter can vent to the atmosphere.
If you notice after several years that your pump is losing air pressure or simply doesn't work as well as when you purchased it, a simple, inexpensive renew kit is available. Replacement Diaphram(s) are available from TJB-INC. The Pond Air 2 uses 1 diaphram and the Pond Air 4 use 2 diaphrams. After installing the renew kit, your pond air pump should be as good as new.

To make the aerator last longer, protect the aerator unit from the elements. We place the aerator on a brick to raise it off the ground. Then we cover the unit with a plastic or clay pot to keep it dry. Becareful not to pinch the air lines. This protects the aerator from the weather and allows the unit to be placed closer to the pond. As stated in the product description, the compressor portion of the aerator must be kept out of the elements. That is why we provide such a long (30') airline. You can install the unit next to a pond and cut the tubing length as long as you cover the compressor unit with a pot, bucket, or cooler to keep the unit dry. The reason is the one-way valve inside the compressor is susceptible to damage if it gets wet. This is not covered under the warranty and will require the user to replace the diaphragm unit.

A proper pond aerator is vital to having a healthy koi pond, water garden or lake no matter what time of year it is. Use a pond air pump during hot weather to provide the necessary oxygen. During the winter an air pump will keep an opening in the ice, add oxygen and help gas off toxins.

Any system will benefit from adding an aerator. An air pump will also help the growth rate of your fish, both koi and goldfish. Adding an aerator will also help the biological process within your pond. Biological filtration requires large amounts of oxygen so pond air pumps should be used.

A fish pond can never have too much oxygen! Never has a truer statement been made. It is needed by aquatic life, pond plants and by the beneficial bacteria responsible for removing poisonous ammonia from your pond water.

A sure sign that your pond could do with more oxygenated water is when your Koi and other fish can be seen gulping for air at the pond surface. This is more likely to happen in warm weather conditions as warm water cannot hold as much oxygen as colder water.

Atmospheric air contains approximately 21% oxygen. This oxygen is absorbed into the pond where it is used up rapidly. In hot weather conditions, as mentioned earlier the oxygen is not absorbed as easily.

For this reason it is always a good idea to incorporate a waterfall or fountain into your pond, as this causes turbulence at the water surface. This turbulence makes it easier for oxygen to be absorbed into the water.

In a previous article I discussed the importance of removing ammonia from your pond as soon as it appears by installing an adequately sized biological pond filter. It isn't actually the biofilter itself that removes the ammonia and nitrite, but rather the nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) that live on the pond filter media housed in the biofilter chamber.

It is fair to say that without these friendly bacteria it would be extremely difficult to prevent your fish succumbing to ammonia poisoning.

You are probably wondering what these bacteria have got to do with an article relating to the importance of oxygen to a biofilter. Let me explain ...
Unlike large lakes and ponds found in nature that have a small population of inhabitants compared with the volume of water the average garden fish pond has a large population of aquatic life in only a small volume of water. Due to this small volume of water the levels of ammonia are proportionately very high. If the ammonia wasn't removed by a biofilter then you would start to see dead fish.

Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate (plant food). The chemical process involved in this conversion process is known as the Nitrogen Cycle and requires vast amounts of oxygen, in order to be carried out effectively.

The process requires a constant supply of oxygenated water. This is why it is important to never switch off the pump supplying water to the biofilter. If you were to switch off the pump the colonies will start to die off after only 5 to 6 hours. The net result is a rapid increase in ammonia levels, particularly if you continue to feed and encourage metabolic fish waste.

Oxygen in ponds comes from two sources--photosynthesis and diffusion from the air. The most important source, photosynthesis, is the process plants use for manufacturing food. In the presence of sunlight, plants (especially algae) add oxygen to water as a by-product of photosynthesis. At night, no oxygen is produced, but respiration of algae, fish and bacteria continues to remove oxygen from the water. Most of the time there is a desirable balance between how much oxygen is produced and how much is used, but under some conditions, the balance can be upset, and the oxygen concentration becomes low enough to stress or kill fish. The amount of oxygen in pond water can vary considerably from pond to pond and from hour to hour. Typically, however, oxygen concentrations are lowest at dawn and highest during late afternoon.

The amount of oxygen water can hold is dependent upon atmospheric pressure, salinity and temperature. Water can hold less oxygen as altitude increases. Salinity is not important for most freshwater fish producers. The most important factor is water temperature. As temperature increases, water can hold less oxygen. Most low oxygen problems occur from June through September. The reasons for this are:

Water can hold less oxygen as it becomes warmer.
Respiration rates of both plants and fish increase with the warmer water, so more oxygen is used.
Summer's still, hazy or cloudy days may reduce the amount of oxygen produced.
Large amounts of feed given to fish at this time of year result in large quantities of fish waste which create a higher demand for oxygen.

Winter Fish Kills, They Don’t Float With Us!
You’ve waited all Winter long for the ice to melt over your water garden so you can run your waterfalls and enjoy your finned friends. Instead, you find your fish floating at the ponds surface, victims of a winter fish kill. What is this phenomenon and how can you prevent it?

Make Some Holes
When a layer of ice forms over the surface of you water garden, it essentially eliminates any transfer of air to or from your pond’s water. What this means to you is that, as debris decompose and your fish consume oxygen, byproducts are produced in the form of gasses that are toxic to your pond’s inhabitants. These gases are trapped under the ice and cannot escape; fresh air from outside the pond cannot reach the water either and so begins the process of the winter fish kill. Keeping a hole in the ice will allow the bad air in the pond to be replenished with good air. Some pond guys and gals use pond De-Icers to maintain an open hole, but many more rely on their aeration systems to do the job.

Pass The Bubbly
We’ve discussed in our past blogs the many benefits of aeration in your water garden. It circulates the water in your pond, infusing it with oxygen which is beneficial to your bacteria and fish. The constant bubbling produced by an aeration system will also keep a hole open in your water garden in the winter months, ensuring the release of those harmful gasses.
