TJB-INC TIPS:

This our choice of black foam dispenser in our water feature construction division. It is very reliable and allows for quick & easy construction of waterfalls & streams. Remember to not remove the foam can unless it is empty. When you remove a foam can, you must use a cleaner can with a spray nozzle to remove any residual foam from the can attachment area. If you forget, when you put the new foam can on the gun, the left over foam will cause the new foam can to adhere to the gun permanently. You most likely have to purchase a new gun.

Remember to attach a cleaner can to the foam gun after every 4 foam cans to clean the gun of foam. Spray the cleaner through the gun until no more foam can be seen. If you plan on leaving the can on the gun for longer then 30 - 45 days, then you should remove the foam can and clean the gun with cleaner as described above.

Following these instructions will allow you to use your foam gun over and over again. If not, we have additional foam guns in stock if you need to order a replacement. We also recommend always having a clean back-up foam gun available on site if your primary gun clogs so you can finish your project with out any additional delays.

NOTE FROM SHOPTJB: For proper flow of foam, the foam can temperature must be above 50 degrees. If you are planning to use the foam when the outside temperatures are below 50 degrees, make sure to warm up the cans/foam by using a car or truck heater or put cans in the sun to warm up the foam. TJB-INC puts the foam cans on the dashboard of the truck in the sun and we use the truck's defroster to keep the cans warm when we are working in colder weather.

FAQ

Q: Every time I use an aerosol can, the foam dispenses when I put the straw on the trigger?
A: Always put the straw on the trigger BEFORE you screw the trigger on the valve. As you put pressure on the valve trying to secure the straw; you just started making a mess with a whipped cream can.

Q: That black foam is messy, is there anything that will take it off my hands?
A: First of all, to my knowledge all cans say USE GLOVES. But if you do get some on your skin use acetone. There are numerous brand names for foam cleaner upwards of $18 a quart (acetone) Go to your local hardware store and pick up a quart of acetone for about $3.

Q: What's the difference between a can that has metric versus an ounce measurement?
A: If you are currently using a can that is metric it is an import. Some companies market their product as a 16 oz can but if you do the math, you are only getting 15 ounces?

Q: Do all cans on the market have to be used upside down?
A: Not if you use ROCKIN FOAM. ROCKIN FOAM can dispense an ANY ANGLE.

Q: I always have to buy at least two of the standard 12 ounce size can, why isn't there a larger can available?
A: ROCKIN FOAM was designed as a true 20 oz can for this very reason.

Q: I don't like cans because if you do have some product left in the can, you can't use it at a later date?
A: ROCKIN FOAM is a reusable can so you can get maximum yield. Just seal the straw on the reserve nub and you can use the can up to 2 to 3 week later for another job.

Q: Why is it important to have product that inhibits ultra violet light?
A: For cosmetic and stability reasons. The color black retards foam degradation ONLY if the foam remains black. ROCKIN FOAM uses CARBON, NOT DYE. A dyed product will fade to a yellow brown color over time.

Q: Won't dyed foam eventually discolor with the algae and water?
A: Yes, BUT, the sun will still effect the degradation of the foam and you will still have a yellowish brown color where the foam does not come into contact with water.

Q: Cans suck! Why doesn't everyone use a cartridge gun?
A: Until the formulation of the 20 oz ROCKIN FOAM, the gun had an application. ROCKIN FOAM is reusable. If you compare the price of ROCKIN FOAM VS. the cost of the gun, cost of the cartridge AND the cost of that super duper $18 quart (acetone) cleaner and your time to clean your gun; ROCKIN FOAM is an obvious choice.

Q: I can get that yellow stuff at the big box super cheap. Why would I want to pay for black foam? When I can just paint the yellow foam black?
A: You must have a lot of free time on your hands and VERY cheap labor!

Q: I've heard that "triple expanding foam is the best"
A: You heard WRONG. Use ROCKIN FOAM as it is "MINIMAL EXPANDING". If you want to pay for more propellant and do a lot of trimming; triple expanding is the way to go. Minimal expanding has better density for secure rock placement.

Q: Why don't the triggers on the cans work?
A: They are too small and you have to use your thump on the valve and you have no control. ROCKIN FOAM has a LONG trigger and you can actually control how fast the foam expels from the can.

Q: Can you compete with my price?

Understand the Dangers of Chlorine in Fish Ponds

Pond owners and service providers have argued the validity of watching the level of chlorine in ponds and whether those chlorine levels are harmful to the aquatic life in a pond. Some report performing partial water changes without treating the tap water to remove chlorine. This devastating error can create untold issues.

Even when koi and other pond fish show no apparent ill effects from untreated water, it doesn't mean the chlorine isn't stressing or harming them. The amount of harmful damage depends on many factors.

To clear the air a bit, here are some fundamental scientific facts about chlorine and pond fish, dragonfly larvae, frogs, tadpoles and other aquatic life often present in pond systems:

Concentrated levels of chlorine kill fish and other aquatic life-forms.
Chlorine is an oxidizer, which removes the necessary slime coat from koi and other pond fish, causing stress and stress-related illnesses.
Chlorine damages the gill structure in koi and other pond fish, causing serious long-term issues and making it difficult for the fish to breath.
As the pond's pH levels go down, chlorine becomes more toxic.
The presence of phenols, a toxic organic chemical found in some types of organic wastes, can combine with chlorine to become extremely toxic.
Chlorine is relatively unstable in water, escaping to the atmosphere on its own. Water left sitting with adequate water circulation will be chlorine-free 24 hours or less.
Sodium thiosulfate easily neutralizes chlorine.
When exposed to high levels of chlorine, koi and other pond fish show signs of irritation, such as swimming erratically or attempting to leave the water.

At lower levels, chlorine is not necessarily life-threatening to koi and other pond fish, but it still can harm them. Affected fish might exhibit fast gill beats and gasp at the water surface to get enough oxygen into their tissues. These symptoms easily can be mistaken for low-oxygen problems, gill parasites or another gill disease, when raw tap water might be to blame.

Here are example chlorine levels and what they can do to pond fish:

.006 mg/L will kill fish fry in about two days.
.003 mg/L will kill insect larvae, such as dragonflies.
.002 mg/L will fatally damage the sensitive skin on tadpoles, frogs, salamanders and other amphibians.
.01 mg/L is the maximum level that experts say adult fish can tolerate.
.25 mg/L is the level at which only the hardiest koi or other pond fish can survive.
.37 mg/L is the level at which all pond fish will die.

If you suspect chlorine damage to pond fish, increase aeration in the pond for a few days. This improves their chances of recovery.

The answer and proper solution to this issue is to use a water treatment chemical. They typically cost pennies per use and safely remove chlorine and chloramines. Read the label to ensure you purchase and use the right product for your needs.

Note:
One problem with water treatment facilities using chlorine to treat water is that it breaks down relatively quickly. Another concern with the use of chlorine is that it can combine with certain organics (that might be present in your water) forming trihalomethanes, a family of carcinogens.

Consequently, many water companies have switched from using chlorine to using chloramine. Chloramine is a compound containing both chlorine and ammonia. It is much more stable than chlorine, but it poses a significant headache for pond enthusiasts. Chlorine-neutralizing chemicals, such as sodium thiosulfate, only neutralize the chlorine portion of the chloramine, neglecting an even bigger problem: deadly ammonia. The consequences can be devastating to koi and other pond fish. A pond's biological filter eventually will convert the ammonia to nitrate, but the time it takes might be longer than the fish can tolerate. Also, the initial presence of the chlorine might have irreparablly damaged to the biological filter, rendering it useless.

Calculations for Water Volume of Ponds , Streams & Waterfalls

Pond Water Volume

(Length x Width x Average Depth) x 7.48 = Water Volume of Pond in gallons

1 cubic ft. = 7.48 gallons of water

Example: Pond Measures: 11’L x16’W x 2’AD

(11'L x 16'W x 2'AD) x 7.48 = 2,634 Gallons of water

(The addition of rocks and gravel will lessen the actual water volume beacuse of displacement)

Water Volume in a Stream

(Length x Width x Depth) x 7.78 = Water Volume of Stream in Gallons

Example: Stream Measures: 15'L x 3'W x 2"D

First Calculate Depth in feet not inches: 1" = 0.12' so ... 2"D = 0.24'D

(15'L x 3"W x 0.24'D) x 7.48 = 81 Gallons of Water

Water Volume in Waterfalls = Same as Streams
