TJB-INC INSTALLATION TIP
At trick that we use at TJB-INC, is to place a white napkin on top of the area where you think a light should go. (You may need to use tape or a rock to keep the napkin from blowing away.) Then stand back and see how it looks. It is much easier to move napkins that it is to move light fixtures. Adjust as you feel necessary until you find a lay-out that you like. Then you will know how many lights you will need to order and install to complete your project.
- When installing these lights in wet or saltwater installations, use a "Di-Electric Silicone" (available at local autoparts or marine supply stores) or Vaseline on all electrical connections. IE: Remove the bulb from the socket, apply the Di-Electric Silicone on the base and re-install the light bulb into the socket. This will prevent the minerals and salts from coroding the electrical connections. You can also use this method on all of your wire connection to assist in the prevention of corosion over the years.
- Use the "L" shaped (included) hold down tabs to secure the fixtures to your surface. Turn the fixture over, then push the hold down tabs into the bottom of the light so there is a tab to the left and right of the fixture which will extend under the adjacent deck boards. (see photos above) This will make it so your lamp fixture will not raise above the height of your decking so there will be no tripping hazard, frost heaving, and a great deterant to theft.
If your decking material is thinner than the light fixture, you can use a scrap piece of lumber to put between the clip and the bottom of the decking to fill the extra space. This will allow the light fixture to be snugged up tight to the decking when you use the hold down tabs. You could also apply adhesive to the edges of the cut hole in the decking and glue the fixture down. Any bulb change would be from the top under the lens and would not be affected by the glue.
Installation in Concrete
For installation in a concrete application, here are some simple suggestions to make your installation easier.
- Run the power feed wires through plastic conduit. At TJB-INC we use flexible conduit and come in through the bottom of the fixture's base. This is for several reasons. First, the flexible conduit allows you the freedom to move the fixture when you do the concrete pour so you can set the correct position for the light to sit. Second, you can replace the wires if there ever was a problem with the wiring. Third, make hole in the conduit below where the bottom of the concrete will be to allow for drainage of water. Water will get into the light unit and will use the flexible conduit as a drain. If you make hole in the conduit below the concrete layer, the water will be allowed to percolate back into the earth below.
- Test all lights before you do the concrete pour. It is much easier to find and correct problem without everything being encased with a thick layer of concrete.
- Insert the includes hold-down tabs into the bottom of the light fixture base.
- Wrap the fixture with a clear plastic wrap like Saran Wrap. Then when you float the fixture in the fresh concrete, none will get inside the fixture. When the concrete dries, cut away any exposed plastic wrap. Use a heat gun for any stubborn pieces being careful not to melt the light fixture.
