TJB-INC INSTALLATION TIP

At TJB-INC, we always use the 4 oz. Underlayment before the liner is installed. We had several bad experiences where we did not use underlayment and developed leaks in the stream liner when liner was walked on. Underlayment would have protected the liner from the sharp objects in the soil from puncturing the liner. So learn from our early mistakes, and protect your liner or wish later that you had!

Liner Dimension Calculations for any type of water feature:
Length + 2x Depth + 2' Safety Overlap = Liner Length
Width + 2x Depth + 2' Safety Overlap = Liner Width

Water Garden Pond Liner Size

To calculate your pond liner size for a water garden pond:

Example:
Your Water Garden Pond is going to be 17' long by 12' feet wide, with a maximum depth of 2'.

Add "Double your Depth" to each dimension to accommodate the vertical walls in the pond. (2 x 2 = 4) So the dimensions adjusted for depth are now 21' long and 16' wide. (17 + 4 = 21 and 12 + 4 = 16)

Now add a "Safety Overlap" of 2' to each of those dimensions. (21 + 2 = 23, and 16 + 2 = 18). Your 17' long by 12' wide pond with a 2' depth and 1' of Safety Overlap on each side would need a 23' x 18' liner.

Liner is sold in 5' increments - so you would purchase a 25' x 20' liner for this pond.

Another example:
11'l x 8'w x 2'd Water Garden Pond
(2' depth x 2 = 4)

Add double the depth to each dimension and add 2' of Safety Overlap to each dimension.
11 + 4 = 15. For overlap add; 15 + 2 = 17 total length.
8 + 4 = 12. For overlap add; 12 + 2 = 14 total width.

Purchase a 20' x 15' Liner for an 11' x 8' pond @ 2' deep.

EPDM LAP SEALANT

Firestone Lap Sealant is specifically designed edge treatment used to ensure a watertight seal while seaming two PondGard EPDM liners. This adhesive caulk serves as a final precaution against leaks and is applied to the outer edge of a seam. Firestone Lap Sealant applies easily using a caulk gun.

Patching Small Holes or Tears

Use the 6" single sided tape. Thoroughly clean the liner area using Primer and an abrasive pad. Wipe clean with a paper towel. Remove the paper backing and apply the tape being careful to provide a smooth cover. Roll to provide pressure to all areas of the tape. Apply Lap Sealant to the tape edges for the final step and allow to dry for several hours before contact with water.

Firestone Lap Sealant HS Method of Application

Surfaces to which Firestone Lap Sealant HS is applied must be clean, dry, free of foreign materials and excess dusting agent. Clean with broom or rags if necessary.

Wait Before Applying Seam Edge Treatment
Wait to apply seam edge treatment a minimum of 4 hours after completion of a flashing unless weather is threatening. If weather is threatening, apply Firestone Spllce Adhesive to the edge of the flashing splice (next step below) before leaving the project. If weather is not threatening, the seam edge must be applied no later than the end of the next day following the completion of the seam.
Coat Flashing Step-Off:
Apply a layer of Firestone Splice Adhesive along the entire seam edge, a minimum of 1" on each side of the step-off following current Firestone Splice Adhesive application procedures. Allow the Splice Adhesive to flash off (get tacky).
Note: If the seam edge has beeen contaminated, clean the seam edge a minimum of 1" on each side of the step off with Firestone QuickPrime Plus and allow to dry, prior to application of the seam edge treatment.
Apply Firestone Lap Sealant HS
Apply a continuous bead of Lap Sealant HS approximately 3/8" x 1/4" centered over the flashing seam edge, using the plastic nozzle applicator supplied by Firestone. Be sure to keep the nozzle applicator centered over the lap step off. Refer to seam details.

How much product will I need to cover my pond?
The amount of product required depends on the size of your pond. A quick way to estimate the square footage of a typical pond is to take your length, width and average depth and multiply the three. For example, if your pond is 10ft by 10ft and 2 feet deep, 10x10x2 =200. One gallon of HERCO Coating will cover about 80 to 100 square feet with the recommended 3 coats, so you will need two gallons of coating in this example. It is always a good idea to allow a little extra, especially if you have overhangs, rocks, waterfalls, etc.
Can I apply HERCO Coating over old paint or coatings?
Yes, but only if the old product is adhering well to the surface below. If you have paint of old coatings that are flaking off, you must completely remove the old product using mechanical means such as wire brushing, sandblasting, scraping, pressure washing (minimum 3000 psi). After removing the old coating and all dust and debris, we recommend a final cleaning with HERCO TC-700 cleaner prior to applying your new coating.
What surfaces can I cover with HERCO Coating?
HERCO Coatings bond tenaciously to just about any surface used in pond construction! Concrete, brick, rock, block, gunite, marcite, wood, steel, aluminum, even plastics and glass can be coated. The surface must be solid, dry and free of debris and you cannot apply the coating directly to dirt or gravel.
Do I need to use the HERCO PSC Primer before applying the coating?

What happens if it starts raining in the middle of the job?

Herco Neoprene Rubber Coating is an excellent finish to cover cement blocks to be used in the pond, stop leaks in concrete waterfalls, or cover concrete or block or other masonry type ponds. One coat of primer and three coats or liquid rubber are recommended for complete sealing of surface. Water may be added as early as 24 hours after last coat has dried. Fish can be added 72 hours later. (We still recommended that a normal pond establishment period pass after stocking with plants before putting in fish) Each gallon of coating covers approximately 100 to 150 square feet for the three coats needed.

Installation and Application

How much product will I need to cover my pond?: The amount of product required depends on the size of your pond. A quick way to estimate the square footage of a typical pond is to take your length, width and average depth and multiply the three. For example, if your pond is 10ft by 10ft and 2 feet deep, 10x10x2 =200. One gallon of HERCO Coating will cover about 80 to 100 square feet with the recommended 3 coats, so you will need two gallons of coating in this example. It is always a good idea to allow a little extra, especially if you have overhangs, rocks, waterfalls, etc.
Can I apply HERCO Coating over old paint or coatings?: Yes, but only if the old product is adhering well to the surface below. If you have paint of old coatings that are flaking off, you must completely remove the old product using mechanical means such as wire brushing, sandblasting, scraping, pressure washing (minimum 3000 psi). After removing the old coating and all dust and debris, we recommend a final cleaning with HERCO TC-700 cleaner prior to applying your new coating.
What surfaces can I cover with HERCO Coating?: HERCO Coatings bond tenaciously to just about any surface used in pond construction! Concrete, brick, rock, block, gunite, marcite, wood, steel, aluminum, even plastics and glass can be coated. The surface must be solid, dry and free of debris and you cannot apply the coating directly to dirt or gravel.
Do I need to use the HERCO PSC Primer before applying the coating?: The HERCO PSC Primer absorbs deep into the microscopic pores of the surface you are coating and is the “first line” of defense against leaks. The PSC primer helps with adhesion of the HERCO H-55 Coating and is an integral part of the coating system. Primer is not required if you are coating directly over a rubber pond liner (see below).
How long will it take to coat my pond?: This depends on the size of your pond. The average garden Koi pond takes 1 or 2 days. Be sure to follow all instructions and allow a minimum of 3 to 4 hours between coats.

Expert Advice

Can I apply HERCO Coating on top of my old pond liner?: Yes! HERCO H-55 adheres well to rubber, even your leaky old pond liner! Just be sure to clean the surface thoroughly before you apply the coating.; NOTE: You will not need to use the PSC Primer when applying coating directly over a rubber liner.
How long does concrete have to cure before applying HERCO Coating?: Concrete surfaces must be fully cured, clean and dry before applying coatings. Generally speaking, concrete needs about 30 days at 75F to cure and dry out before applying any coating or sealer, though it may take significantly longer in rainy or cold weather. The product will not adhere well or cure properly if applied to wet concrete.
Is the HERCO product safe for my fish?: Yes. The HERCO Coating System is specially formulated for pond use. When properly applied and cured, the membrane is completely inert and 100% safe for your fish and aquatic plants. The formulation is also environmentally friendly and meets or exceeds the most stringent regulatory requirements.
Under what weather conditions should I apply the product?: Ideally, the coatings should be applied under temperate conditions. HERCO Coatings are air-cured and should not be applied at temperatures under 45F or in rainy weather, as this will prevent proper curing of the product. If the temperature is above 90F, it is best to coat in the early morning or evening and out of the direct sun.
What happens if it starts raining in the middle of the job?: While it is best to start the job when the forecast is for clear weather, in the event that rain falls on the uncured coating, simply allow extra time for the coating to dry completely before continuing with the job or applying any additional coats. The coating needs to be dry to the touch before you apply an additional coat.

TJB-INC INSTALLATION TIPS:

We use this underlayment in all of our water feature installations.
Anywhere we install EPDM liner, we first put down 1 or more layers of the underlayment. The amount of layers is determined by how clean the soil is under the liner. If there is not a lot of rocks or roots, one layer will do. If you are installing pond liner over rock, roots, or sharp debris, then we recommend putting a layer of sand or stone dust down first on all of the horizontal surfaces. Then follow-up with a layer of underlayment. If your sidewalls are bad, then sand won't work for vertical surfaces. This is where we would double or triple layer the underlayment so we are protected against punctures in the liner from buried debris.
If you are placing large rocks in the pond, cut a piece of unerlayment to go between the rock and the pond liner. If the rock is very rough, use several layers of fabric.
Most punctures are caused when you go to re-position a rock when it is on top of the liner. As you swivel the rock, it grabs the liner and creates a tear. This can still happen if you use a scrap piece of pond liner. Rubber against rubber grabs and can still tear the pond liner. That is why TJB-INC recommends using a piece of underlayment (instead of extra liner) under the larger rocks. Do not worry how it looks. When you add the smaller filler rocks and the gravel, the piece of underlayment you used will be covered up.
Underlayment is cheap compared to having to go back and finding a leak(s) & repairing it!
